I have spoken about my mom and step-dad a lot in this blog. They mean the world to me. If we buy the house we have put a bid on, I will be living very close to them. They are getting up there in age and I worry about them. My baby sister worries the most. She is a Registered Nurse, and understands very well all of their medical problems. My step dad will be (I think) 72 next month, might be 73 I will have to ask my mother. My mom is no spring chicken herself and both of them have a slew of medical problems. Him, arthritis and diabetes, her, COPD, asthma, and arthritis. They get around, but it’s sad to watch them slow down like they have. Sometimes I can see the pain in their eyes.
My sister is worried about them. She is worried that something could happen to one of them, while the other wasn’t around. She is worried about one of them falling down, and really getting hurt and having to stay that way until someone came to help. If nobody knew one of them was in trouble, they could stay that way for some time. My step dad golfs three times a week, bless his heart.
A Medical Alert, that has a fall detector, and would alert the emergency agency would be a good idea. As would a GPS tracking bracelet that could be used like a cell phone, if my step dad was in an accident and needed help. My sister and I plan on discussing the different Medical Alert options available to us, the next time she comes down, which will be around Easter. Of course we have to discuss it with our parents also, and present it in such a way that it doesn’t offend them or make them feel like we think they are feeble. They both have a lot of pride and don’t like to be reminded about their age and health problems.
