My parents live down here in Florida also. In fact just 10 miles down the road. My mom and step father have always wanted to retire to Florida and five years ago, they got to do just that. My parents are getting up in age and I worry about them. A lot. I make sure I call several times a day and my mother always calls me to let me know if they are going out so I wont worry if I call and they don’t answer.
I worry about one of them falling and getting hurt and nobody being around. My step father golfs several days a week. He’s 72 years old, bless his heart. But his hands and feet hurt badly at the end of the day and he takes tons of medications. He is also diabetic. I worry about my mother falling or getting hurt while he is out.
My mother has COPD and Asthma. She uses a breathing machine several times a day, and is also on medications. She is active, not as active as she used to be, but she does pretty good for her condition and age. But I still worry.
I’ve been reading about Life Alert, which is a a home monitoring system that has a personal Panic Button. What makes it different and what caught my eye is the automatic Fall Detector. If my mother fell, and couldn’t or wouldn’t press the button, the Fall Detector would automatically call for help.
I’m going to discuss Life Alert with my sister who is a RN next week when she comes down for summer vacation. Maybe between the two of us, we can convince our parents that this would be a good idea. Knowing them, they will hate the idea.
